Update to Rule 1000.1 – Commander Selection

March 13, 2026

The world of Magic: The Gathering is in constant and rapid expansion. In recent times we have seen the introduction of new card types, explorations of new worlds through Universes Beyond, and mechanics that challenge the traditional conception of the game. As the Centurion Commander committee, our primary goal has always been to keep the format healthy, balanced, and faithful to its competitive 1v1 nature. These changes have also brought updates to the Comprehensive Rules that have expanded the definition of which cards can be designated as a commander.

To keep the Centurion Commander rules fully aligned with the official rules of the game, we have updated the wording of rule 1000.1 – Commander Selection. The goal is to make explicit a commander definition consistent with what is provided in the Comprehensive Rules, including the new categories of cards that can legally fulfill this role.

The previous version of the rule stated:

“Players choose a legendary creature or a specific planeswalker (the ones with ‘can be your commander’ wording) as the commander for their deck.”

The rule is now updated as follows:

“Each deck has a legendary card designated as its commander. That card must be either a creature card, a Vehicle card, or a Spacecraft card with one or more power/toughness boxes [see MTG CR 903.3]. Some cards have an ability that states the card can be your commander. This ability modifies the rules for deck construction, and it functions before the game begins [see MTG CR 903.3a].”

This update formally clarifies that legendary Vehicles and Spacecraft with one or more power/toughness boxes can also be chosen as commanders, in line with what is provided in the Comprehensive Rules.

This is primarily an alignment and precision update to the rules: the functioning of the format does not change, but the definition is now made explicit and consistent with the current structure of Magic’s rules.

We will continue to monitor updates to the Comprehensive Rules to ensure that the format’s rules remain clear, up to date, and consistent with the evolution of the game.
